How this mosquito can change your life.
An Inch to Win it!
A million things happen to you on a daily basis. The coffee brewed up perfectly this morning, you hit a green light on the second block of your commute, yet tomorrow you will remember almost none of it. Why would you? However, when you get to work that one driver that cut you off you remember and tell your co-worker all about. Lots of people have similar experiences, but everyone tells a different story.
Over time, our story gets rehearsed and changed in our heads and this is the story our memory provides. Little things become big things. Almost every habit you have good or bad is the result of many small decisions made over time. In the film “Any Given Sunday” Al Pacino’s character recounts how it’s the little things that make such a big difference.
“Because in either game life or football the margin for error is so small. I mean one half step too late or to early you don't quite make it. One half second too slow or too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They are in ever break of the game every minute, every second”.
You cannot win in life or football unless your mind is right. Little things always become big things. If you chose to eat one Oreo cookie after dinner a day thinking it is just a small desert well that would add up to over 29,000 calories in a year about the equivalent of a 5 gallon jug of bacon grease. In the moment that small decision seems trivial but over time compounds into a larger item.
I was recently driving down the freeway and spotted a mosquito flying in my car, I continued to swat at that mosquito for nearly five minutes until I finally caught it, setting traps for it with my interior light turning it on and off trying to capture that tiny little mosquito’s attention. In those split moments I was not focused on the road or others around me at all. I could have gotten into a an accident, cut someone off, or missed out on a great thought popping into my head all because I was solely focused on that tiny mosquito. How often in life do we become consumed with a tiny annoyance like a long line at the grocery store, or something a family member or friend casually said to you that you took offense to and now are consumed with anger towards them. We stop focusing on the windshield of our life and all the beauty outside it and the world passing us by so we can swat at that mosquito.
If we simply started telling ourselves a different story, we can change our narrative of life and the way you see it. Because, what you see in the world is the reality of it. Don’t focus on the small obstacles you
face like a mosquito but focus on the incredible blessing you encounter daily……..The fact you have a job, you can walk or run, you have a car, you have loved one’s……..any of these are incredible gifts that millions of people in the world would love to have.
If the story your telling yourself isn’t helping you, work to rehearse a new story instead. It is our narrative that determines who we become each and every day. Little becomes big, so change the little things and you will change the big things. As Rocky Balboa changed the course of world history by single handedly ending the Cold War by saying….”If you can change, and I can change, then WE CAN ALL CHANGE!” So get out there and make it an awesome day and Win the Day the Little Way!!!!
